Custom pipe bending/ tube bending is the process of creating bends or curves in copper tubing for various plumbing, HVAC, or electrical applications. The bending process involves deforming the copper tube’s shape using mechanical force or heat.
The most common methods of custom pipe bending are:
- Manual bending. In this method, we bend the copper tube manually to the desired angle by using a bending tool. This method is suitable for small diameter tubes and simple bending applications.
- Mandrel bending. This method uses a mandrel (a metal rod) by inserting inside the tube to prevent it from collapsing during the bending process. The mandrel is then pulled out after the bending process is complete. This method is suitable for bending larger diameter tubes and producing precise bends.
- Rotary-draw bending. This method uses a specialized machine that pulls the copper tube around a bending die while simultaneously rotating it. The machine has a mandrel that supports the tube during the bending process. This method is suitable for producing complex bends and shapes.
- Induction bending. By using an induction coil, we heat the copper tube then causing it to soften and become malleable. The tube is then bent to the desired angle using a bending tool. This method is suitable for bending large diameter and thick-walled tubes.
In general, the copper tube bending process involves selecting the appropriate method for the specific application, selecting the correct bending tool or machine, preparing the copper tube by cleaning and deburring the ends, and then executing the bend to the desired angle and shape.
